Our Girls

Here is Em at her first Halloween Party of the year. It was held at church and she had a wonderful time. She is checking to see how much candy she has accumulated:) Going through a "haunted" maze. Must have been really scary by the look on her face! Kate along for the ride. She's our little cuddly bear:) Even though we had fun, it is very possible that she picked up H1N1 at the Halloween Bash. The party was last Sunday and Tuesday night she came down with 104.5 fever. The next day we took her in to see our doctor and she said she was 90% sure it was the swine flu. What a bummer. Emily has been sick with high fevers before, but this was/is a pretty nasty bug. She didn't move off the bed for 2 days. She watched movie after movie and slept lots. She wanted to be held the entire time. Even while she slept. I heard the words "hold me mommy" more in the last 2 days than in her entire life. After about 60 hours the fever broke and now she is a little bit more he...

The Homecoming parade this year was a chilly experience. Here is Kate all bundled up. You can't even tell she has on her Mizzou gear - you will have to take my word for it. Emily looks a bit happier than Kate about being left out in the cold. I think she is just thinking about all the candy that will be thrown. That girl LOVES candy! This was the first time Emily enjoyed a cup of hot coco. She has had it several times before but never liked it. Today it sounded good and she drank it all down. Kate was amused with the parade and all it's festivities until it was nap-time. Then she just closed her eyes and went to sleep. About 90 minutes later, she awoke and was all smiles:) I sure wish I could do that when I was tired! Here are the girls watching Marching Mizzou go by. Em has decided she wants to play french horn. Kate, Our Little Trick-ster This week brings an all new level of fear for Mommy and Daddy. Kate has started to balance standing on her own. No hands needed. Here is how she gets the job done. #1. She starts in a seated position. #2. Then she uses a flat wall, or anything else she can find (pant leg, toy, shelf, etc.) to pull up. #3. She achieves the standing position rather quickly. Squeals with delight and shows off only using one hand. #4. Then she quickly flips her body around and lets go with both hands. This is the "Look at me, I'm so big" face after her mission is completed. #5. And last but not least, she takes a tiny step forward so that she's not touching the wall or anything at all. She balances for about 2-3 seconds and then falls to the ground. I don't have a picture of her balancing without touching anything yet. I am normally just trying to save her from falling on something. Now repeat these 5 steps over and over and over and over again for hour...

Last night if you were to walk into our house at around 6:30 you would have seen quite the show unfolding before your eyes. Katie had decided that she was tired and perhaps did not want to wait until 7 for bedtime. I had decided that she needed to stay up just a little bit longer and devised a scheme to keep her entertained. My scheme involved me singing and just generally doing the kinds of things that keep a 7-month-old happy. My first piece was the Mizzou fight songs (as they involve both lively singing AND clapping AND cheering I figured, correctly, that they would be a huge hit with the Kate Monster). After my first round through the fight songs, Emily climbed down from her chair and said, "Daddy, let's sing that one about the Tigers fighting for Mizzou again." I complied. Now, not only were the Mizzou fight songs entertaining Katie, but now as a bonus Emily was also occupied. I gladly would have sang and clapped until physically unable to continue. Emily is getting very crafty at creating excuses for not taking a bath. Tonight her excuse was "If I take a bath, it will wash off my rainbow (face paint) and then Ms. Pat will NEVER EVER see it." She said it in a VERY dramatic tone. We took this picture, e-mailed it to Pat and then Em climbed in the tub defeated. The parents win. (At least this time). If only it was always this easy...
