Tiger Spirit and Daddy's Band

Last night if you were to walk into our house at around 6:30 you would have seen quite the show unfolding before your eyes.

Katie had decided that she was tired and perhaps did not want to wait until 7 for bedtime. I had decided that she needed to stay up just a little bit longer and devised a scheme to keep her entertained. My scheme involved me singing and just generally doing the kinds of things that keep a 7-month-old happy. My first piece was the Mizzou fight songs (as they involve both lively singing AND clapping AND cheering I figured, correctly, that they would be a huge hit with the Kate Monster).

After my first round through the fight songs, Emily climbed down from her chair and said, "Daddy, let's sing that one about the Tigers fighting for Mizzou again." I complied. Now, not only were the Mizzou fight songs entertaining Katie, but now as a bonus Emily was also occupied. I gladly would have sang and clapped until physically unable to continue.

Emily ran around dancing and clapping and singing the parts she knew (a "Mizzou" here, a "tiger" there). After several minutes of high energy dancing, Emily needed a break. She plopped down on the kitchen floor and began the question-and-answer part of the show.

E: "Daddy, where did you learn all of those songs?"
Me: "I was in a band a long time ago, before you were born."
E: "And before Katie was born too?"
Me: "Yes, a looooong time ago. My band was called Marching Mizzou."
E: "And who was in your band with you."
Me: "Well... Mommy was in my band, Eric and Amy, Dr. Knight, Megan, Jonah's Dad Mike was in the band... uhm Miss Amy was in the band..."
E: "Miss Amy Knopps?"
Me: "Yeah Amy Knopps."
E: "Who Else was in your band?"
Me: "Well... John and Elizabeth...Bratcher
E: "Bratcher whose party we went to ?"
Me: "Yeah, and Ringo was in the band."
E: "Ringo who came to our house and made cupcakes with me?"
Me: "Yeah and there were a whole bunch of other people in my band."

(Pause for three-year-old processing)

E: "Wow Daddy , I didn't know that about your band. Dancing break over - time for you to sing and clap again"
