Joy and Sadness

This past summer Jessica lost her Grandma Bert - who was one of the few people who would always send us email comments after we updated our blog (even when we took 6 month breaks). Grandma Bert was active and headstrong and funny right up to the end. We loved her. And we miss her.

As is sometimes the case, though, her memorial was a chance to get many family members together. Even though the occasion was a sad one, we were still able to celebrate her life, and celebrate time together as a family.
Here is Katie and her cousin (really first cousin once removed but who's counting) Ellie lighting the candles for the service.


After the service, we had a gathering at Aunt Kathy's house and the next day the entire crew went down to the Lake where so many Kinney memories were made, and continued the celebration there.

And then Aunt Jen and Uncle Nate threw kids into the lake until their arms hurt. Literally.

Where: Kansas City Music Hall When: mid-February 2020 Emily's dance competition season started out strong with her team's performance at the Nexstar Dance competition in downtown Kansas City. Answered Prayers

If you read the title and were expecting something inspirational, poignant and truly spiritual... then I would lower my expectations if I were you. Although true to the title, this post will revolve around prayer. May I just first say that this post could refer to the prayers of a strung-out father and mother both of whom had a day of hell with their beloved infant, three-year-old and puppy. Their prayers were something like: "Please God remind me that I love these people and remind me FAST!" another prayer might have gone something like: " If I can just make it a few more hours, they'll all go to sleep, please Lord in Heaven let them go to sleep." And, again, true to the title those prayers were (luckily for the daughters and puppy's sake) answered. But those are not the prayers to which the post's title refers. No. Allow me to set the stage. Our last trip to Toys R Us brought wonderful learning opportunities for Emily. She had $10 of birthday money to spend on whatever she wanted. But what she wanted was $20. I was so proud of her for not throwing a fit when I said she couldn't have it. Instead we talked and we talked and we talked some more about the fact that she only had $10 not $20. It would have been much easier if I would have actually had $10 cash and she could have tried to buy the other toy, but I didn't have cash. And she knew it. "Just use your card mom" is what she said. This discussion led to her asking "how can I get more money?" And me replying, "Perhaps it is time for an allowance!" And so we started forming a plan. Emily gets paid $2.00 a week (half her age). Part of that $2.00 is doing what is expected of her as a 4 year old as part of our family. It is expected that she not throw fits, get dressed in the morning, clear her dishes from the table, and be kind to all me...
