The family St. Patrick's tradition is to run the 4-mile Kelly's Run in Quincy on the Sunday before St. Pat's. Either the run is the actual tradition or the eating of nachos and drinking of green beer is the tradition - it's a toss up. Emily came along this year (she had green water and a cinnamon roll for those of you speed-dialing child services).

However, Em's highlight was the bagpiper. The rest of us thought it was fun for about 30 seconds, but Emily could not get enough. I held her up on my shoulders so she could watch him and then when we bumped into him on the way out we HAD to get a picture.

Also, Emily thought that I ran so fast that I probably won, but then was confused when I didn't get a medal: "Maybe next year you'll get a medal daddy." Probably not, but I will go ahead and sign myself up for more green beer.

Answered Prayers

If you read the title and were expecting something inspirational, poignant and truly spiritual... then I would lower my expectations if I were you. Although true to the title, this post will revolve around prayer. May I just first say that this post could refer to the prayers of a strung-out father and mother both of whom had a day of hell with their beloved infant, three-year-old and puppy. Their prayers were something like: "Please God remind me that I love these people and remind me FAST!" another prayer might have gone something like: " If I can just make it a few more hours, they'll all go to sleep, please Lord in Heaven let them go to sleep." And, again, true to the title those prayers were (luckily for the daughters and puppy's sake) answered. But those are not the prayers to which the post's title refers. No. Allow me to set the stage. Our last trip to Toys R Us brought wonderful learning opportunities for Emily. She had $10 of birthday money to spend on whatever she wanted. But what she wanted was $20. I was so proud of her for not throwing a fit when I said she couldn't have it. Instead we talked and we talked and we talked some more about the fact that she only had $10 not $20. It would have been much easier if I would have actually had $10 cash and she could have tried to buy the other toy, but I didn't have cash. And she knew it. "Just use your card mom" is what she said. This discussion led to her asking "how can I get more money?" And me replying, "Perhaps it is time for an allowance!" And so we started forming a plan. Emily gets paid $2.00 a week (half her age). Part of that $2.00 is doing what is expected of her as a 4 year old as part of our family.
