Spooktacular 2018

When: Halloween (give or take a few days), 2018

We have a few Halloween traditions, and one of the first and BEST of those is the carving of the pumpkins. Whenever possible we like to honor this tradition with our cousins. This year we held the Bach Family Carva-thon at our house.

Katie was loving the gut-scooping. 


Molly is not as wild about the guts and mess, but she loves the designs. Payton and Riley are working hard on their masterpieces in the background. 

The finished products! One pumpkin is an owl, one is an elephant - Molly and Emily's favorite animals. Katie went with a more traditional Halloween design.


Another time-honored Halloween tradition is BOO-ING! We were able to do some great sneaking and boo-ing around our 'hood. We've got our getaway technique perfected!

And of course there's the Halloween parade at school Molly decided to be Moll-eficent this year.

Then the big Trick or Treat night arrived. We invited a few families over to join us for a chili dinner, before costuming up and hitting the streets for candy.
 This year's costumes:
Emily - an elephant
Katie - the little yellow slow-children-at-play sign guy
Molly - Maleficent


They were quite a creatively costumed crew!

"When you prick your finger on the spindle of the spinning wheel...."

Finally, the highlight of the night (for the kids) the counting and trading of loot!

Where: Kansas City Music Hall When: mid-February 2020 Emily's dance competition season started out strong with her team's performance at the Nexstar Dance competition in downtown Kansas City. Little did we know that this would be the last competition of the season, and there wouldn't be much dancing period for a loooong time.  Emily and her long-time dance partner in crime Kylie And we even had time to cross the border into Kansas (booo) and see Emily's friend Kate in action at a volleyball tournament.

Answered Prayers

If you read the title and were expecting something inspirational, poignant and truly spiritual... then I would lower my expectations if I were you. Although true to the title, this post will revolve around prayer. May I just first say that this post could refer to the prayers of a strung-out father and mother both of whom had a day of hell with their beloved infant, three-year-old and puppy. Their prayers were something like: "Please God remind me that I love these people and remind me FAST!" another prayer might have gone something like: " If I can just make it a few more hours, they'll all go to sleep, please Lord in Heaven let them go to sleep." And, again, true to the title those prayers were (luckily for the daughters and puppy's sake) answered. But those are not the prayers to which the post's title refers. No. Allow me to set the stage. Allowance

Our last trip to Toys R Us brought wonderful learning opportunities for Emily. She had $10 of birthday money to spend on whatever she wanted. But what she wanted was $20. I was so proud of her for not throwing a fit when I said she couldn't have it. Instead we talked and we talked and we talked some more about the fact that she only had $10 not $20. It would have been much easier if I would have actually had $10 cash and she could have tried to buy the other toy, but I didn't have cash. And she knew it. "Just use your card mom" is what she said. This discussion led to her asking "how can I get more money?" And me replying, "Perhaps it is time for an allowance!" And so we started forming a plan. Emily gets paid $2.00 a week (half her age). Part of that $2.00 is doing what is expected of her as a 4 year old as part of our family.
