Another school year came to a close, and there were the usual awards ceremonies, photo ops and this year a DARE graduation for Emily.

Here's Em with her gang of friends. Next stop: Middle School!


And here's Jessica with her  gang of school friends aka co-workers aka the world's best reading teachers.

Awards can lead to silly faces.

I can't remember exactly how Katie's face abruptly met the concrete of the sidewalk, but she took a tumble, and as a result the side of her face was scratched up for this year's awards assembly. She also doesn't look terribly interested in what was going on at this particular moment.

DARE graduates! Sidenote: the day after the DARE graduation, Emily was at a birthday party where adults and kids were all gathered together in one spot. There were adult and kid beverages. She picked up her glass of pink lemonade and took a swig only to discover (to her horror) that she had just taken a gulp of someone's wine spritzer. And afterward she just kept saying: I JUST took the DARE pledge not to drink alcohol!

Where: Kansas City Music Hall When: mid-February 2020 Emily's dance competition season started out strong with her team's performance at the Nexstar Dance competition in downtown Kansas City. Little did we know that this would be the last competition of the season, and there wouldn't be much dancing period for a loooong time.  Emily and her long-time dance partner in crime Kylie And we even had time to cross the border into Kansas (booo) and see Emily's friend Kate in action at a volleyball tournament.

Answered Prayers

If you read the title and were expecting something inspirational, poignant and truly spiritual... then I would lower my expectations if I were you. Although true to the title, this post will revolve around prayer. May I just first say that this post could refer to the prayers of a strung-out father and mother both of whom had a day of hell with their beloved infant, three-year-old and puppy. Their prayers were something like: "Please God remind me that I love these people and remind me FAST!" another prayer might have gone something like: " If I can just make it a few more hours, they'll all go to sleep, please Lord in Heaven let them go to sleep." And, again, true to the title those prayers were (luckily for the daughters and puppy's sake) answered. But those are not the prayers to which the post's title refers. No. Allow me to set the stage. Our last trip to Toys R Us brought wonderful learning opportunities for Emily. She had $10 of birthday money to spend on whatever she wanted. But what she wanted was $20. I was so proud of her for not throwing a fit when I said she couldn't have it. Instead we talked and we talked and we talked some more about the fact that she only had $10 not $20. It would have been much easier if I would have actually had $10 cash and she could have tried to buy the other toy, but I didn't have cash. And she knew it. "Just use your card mom" is what she said. This discussion led to her asking "how can I get more money?" And me replying, "Perhaps it is time for an allowance!" And so we started forming a plan. Emily gets paid $2.00 a week (half her age). Part of that $2.00 is doing what is expected of her as a 4 year old as part of our family. It is expected that she not throw fits, get dressed in the morning, clear her dishes from the table, and be kind to all me...
